The Santa Fe Improv program is a wonderful way to learn, practice and perform improv. Furthermore, the lessons are based on such solid fundamentals that go beyond improv & comedy and into improving overall ability with creative thinking.
I originally attended a performance by SFI that inspired me to sign up for an Intro to Improv class. Led by instructor, Scott Plunket, the class was like a crash course in releasing the old narratives you carry around about yourself and being totally present with a group of strangers. Just learning everyone’s names was a mini breakthrough for me because I had to be there, really there. And this is a lot of what improv teaches. I ended up taking the plunge and signing up for the 8 week course. It was a time of constantly pushing your personal boundaries, bonding with your team, learning to think spontaneously and off the cuff in ways you never knew you could, and of course, lots of laughing. I highly recommend SFI, for a trial run or for more lengthy courses. Three things I learned are key: listening, being present, and courage. Your personal box will only get bigger or transform into something entirely different.
Every class is a profound adventure in being human.
Who knew that in just 24 weeks, I could have loads more confidence, increased listening and recall skills, think better under pressure, get a handle on public speaking and quit smoking! I just wanted to flex my comedic funny bone, but now I see that Santa Fe Improv is the cosmic Roto-Rooter to my dysfunctional Self.
Working with the teachers and the players has been an exciting challenge, and now I’m in love with improv! Along the way I’ve learned to take more risks away from the classroom and to make better choices ‘in the moment’ in critical situations.
Joining Santa Fe Improv is the best decision I’ve ever made. Each class is like a little vacation that gets me through the week.
This summer I took Scott Plunket’s Improv 1 class at Santa Fe Improv. What a joy it was! Scott is an awesome teacher with a real passion for the art of improv and for sharing it with others. The class was wonderfully structured with a very natural progression of games. I loved how the emphasis was on being authentic rather than trying to be funny. It took all the pressure off, which ended up paving the way for some totally hilarious and original moments. The low-pressure environment made me realize that improv isn’t scary at all! I would highly recommend trying out improv to anyone who is interested in letting loose, being yourself, meeting new friends, and having fun!
